About Me

I then joined Jim Henson’s Muppets, where I designed and built puppets in the legendary Muppet Workshop for various productions. Some favorites include The Muppet Christmas Carol, Muppet Treasure Island, and many magical years of Sesame Street, for which I won an Emmy Award (also a four-time Emmy Nominee.)

Eventually becoming Creative Director for the Sesame Street Muppets, I also worked in other areas of the show, including toys, games, home video/audio, advertising/publicity, live appearances, exhibits, and children’s books — always a special passion for me. I was with the Muppets for over a decade.

I’ve illustrated a number of picture books, my favorites being Funny Food Faces, with photographer John E. Barrett, and Imagination Song, by Joe Raposo.

I am a Board Member of The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), for which I speak at conferences and conduct workshops around the country. For the Original Art, the annual exhibition of children’s book illustration at the Society of Illustrators in New York, I’m Artistic Advisor to the exhibit — a truly unique and wonderful show of the best in children’s book art.

As a little boy growing up in Texas, I  dreamed of becoming a Jedi . . . instead, I’ve grown-up to be an Art Director for Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers and Paula Wiseman Books In New York, where I collaborate with incredible illustrators, authors, and editors to create picture books, middle-grade novels, and teen novels. (While very fun, I’d still really love those Jedi Powers . . .)

I began my professional career in costume design and creation at the New York Shakespeare Festival, making hats, headdresses, crowns, and other fun stuff for New York’s Shakespeare in Central Park and some Broadway shows.
